Our a2 coursework task this year was to produce a music video. I formed a group with Lewis Holifiled and Adam Brown, and we begun researching music videos. These music videos would give us a some sort of inspiration for what our video could be like.
After the reasearch we looked into artists we could use for our video. In the end, we narrowed it down to two artists; Colloquial Spatulism and Agnostic Clown. We decided on Agnostic Clown and his song "Standing in the Rain". We chose this song, as if offered plenty of scope for our video, and gave us room to craft the song around the video.
Our original plan was to film someone waiting for someone else, them not turning up, and for the original character to go to the places the couple were going to. These included a mini golf course and a beach pier. Due to monetary constraints and time issues, we couldn't use this idea. Instead we opted for something more simplistic, in that someone would be waiting for someone else at a bus stop, and the other person not showing.
Our music video features several nods to popular culture, i.e. Gavin and Stacy (on the television in the middle section), Nike trainers (at the start), and a Manchester United hoodie (throughout). These were added into the video to give the whole piece a sense of familiarity, as these are things that people see on a regular basis, and will make the whole thing seem more real.
In retrospect, there were scenes I would've liked to re film. The bits at the bus stop could've been filmed better, and the performance scenes, which we found to be similar to the music videos we researched, maybe shouldve been better placed (location wise).
People who had seen the video gave the video positive feedback, saying for the genre it fits, it's perfect.
In all, I felt our music video portrays the conventions shown in other rock/acoustic rock videos quite well.
We also had to create a DVD cover and and advert for aforementioned DVD. Full analysis of the texts can be found on the respective blog posts.
In all, I felt our group did well in our task. Maybe if we'd spent our time wisely, we'd have a visually better video, however what we have done I am very proud of.

Advert

Heres the advert for the DVD. The advert is the DVD cover on a brickwall, as a poster would be. The advert would be featured in a magazine, maybe as a poster.
The advert has , written in stencil, the artist name, the release information and some critical repsonses. This is apparent in other asverts we looked at. The stencil is meant to look as if it's been grafitti'd on. This idea came to me when looking at the album covers "21st Century Breakdown" and "Think Tank", by Green Day and Blur respectivly.
The wall itself is there to represent the difficulty of the music industry. Often the music industry has been likened to a "brick wall", as in attempting to break into if is like "running into a brick wall". As the Agnostic Clown is an unsigned artist, we decided this is a perfect connotation of unsigned acts per se.
Ideally I would have wanted the poster to be washed away slightly, however it proved impossible.
DVD Cover

This is our final DVD cover. The cover uses a gray, black and white colour scheme, which reflects the music video. The front of the cover has 4 images from the video. The spine of the cover features the name of the DVD and the artist name. The back feature a track list and more images from the video.
All of the writing in on the cover is black, which somewhat reflects the mood of the song used in the video.

Standing in the Rain- Rough Cut
The filming is done, the editing is in full flow. Above is what we in the business call a "rough cut". Its is shot in black and white, mostly, apart for the split second it changes to colour. We've recognised the need to fully implement the narrative, and in order to do that we need to film the remainder of the story.
But, we've got a leg to stand on now. Onwards and upwards.

An Update
Right, our filming is all but finished. We've filmed a substantial amount of our performance scenes, so much so that it's finished. Our story, however, needs about 3/4 minutes more added, to it, so we have plenty to edit. We've yet to finish editing, due to our technical issues, but we're working hard to resolve this.

Problems and Solutions
As of now, we have only 2 minutes left to film.
Unfortunatly, we are unable to capture what footage we do have onto the media computers, despite our best efforts. We've tried using both premire pro and movie maker, but nothing's working. neither does saving it to a memory stick.
if we can't get it on later/tomorrow, we will be forced to capture it onto one of our home computers, which lack premiere pro. so it'll be movie maker.

Song lyrics- Standing in the Rain
So, these are the lyrics to the song we'tre using. Enjoy!
Girl...
I’ve got the feeling that there’s some else,
I guess I’ll be here all by myself;
Just standing in the rain.
Girl...
I’ve got the feeling that there’s someone new,
I don’t know why nor I don’t know who;
But I know I’ll feel the pain.
And I try, try and I try to understand,
And I cry, cry and I cry cos I’m only a man,
And I try, try and I try;
But look at the state I’m in.....
Oh Girl...
I’ve got the feeling that there’s some else,
I guess I’ll be here all by myself;
Just standing in the rain.
And I try, try and I try to understand,
And I cry, cry and I cry cos I’m only a man,
And I try, try and I try;
But look at the state I’m in.....
Oh Girl...
I’ve got the feeling that there’s someone new,
I don’t know why nor I don’t know who;
But I know I’ll feel the pain.
Oh girl….. I’m standing in the rain.
Oh girl…. I’m standing in the rain.
Oh my girl…..
I’m standing in the rain.

An update (amongst other things)
First of all I'd like to apologise to Anthony Begley. I did not mean to offend you in my last post. What was said was read in the wrong context.
Second of all, we've begun filming, and will no doubt be finished by wednesday, giving us 3 days to edit what we will have.
Due to time limits ect, we've had to change our idea. We will now shoot the video in a park rather than a beach, and the "fairground of distress" idea has no been transformed into a "house of sadness" concept, where the main protagonist comes home after being stood up, and watched some television, plays video games ect, while feeling quite sorry for himself.
What we've filmed so far includes an over the shoulder shot of the protagonist watching a happy moment on the television, and a close up of him getting ready to leave the house. Then, (guess what?), the camera died. we were going to film a section where the protagonist is waiting for someone.

A letter from Antony Clown
The AgnosticClown has replied to the e-mail inwhich we sent him, and the response has been less than porductive, to be honest. Read for yourself...
hi Guys,
love the ideas on the video...
the walking on the beach in the rain sounds good and i'm a big fan of the black & white theme to add to the saddness.
As for any ideas i have?
this song was written over ten years ago (when i was in my teens)
i remember that if i ever did a video, it was going to be many screenshots of a girl in a rain mac waiting for me on a bus stop and myself waiting somewhere else standing in the rain cos we somehow got our meeting place wrong... hence why i think she was cheating!
that's about all i have really...
having said that... i'm a songwriter not a film maker so i'll leave it to you wizz kids :)
if i can help in any way let me know and i'll see what i can do!
good work lads...
Anthony
aka AgnosticClown
As you can see he kinda likes our ideas, however doesn't particularly want to play any part in the actual filming. obviously we'll stay in touch and send him the end product, to make sure the actual video doesn't offend the clown

AgnosticClown: First Contact
So, we've got the song. It took long enough, but we've got it. When we recieved the song, we also got an e-mail from the artist himself, explaining that there is a free dowload if we're interested. What has excited the group is the possibility of contacting the artist, which we shall do. If he could offer any form of input, it could give us a big boost in terms of quality.
In terms of the concept, it has remained unchanged, which can only be a good thing.
Now to e-mail the man himself.

The Music Video: A Walkthrough
3 posts in 2 days, thats unheard of on this blog. But due to recent changes, it's gonna happen. This post is basically to inform you all what the video will actually be about.
We see our main protagonist standing alone on a beach, two packets of fish and chips in hand. After a check on what time it is, he throws the food items on the sand/pebbles in some sort of fury. He then pulls out his ipod, switches on the song in which we're using, and at that point the song shall play in the foreground.
As we follow the protagonist, he enters some sort of fair, where he partakes in various activies (mini golf, whatever games are in the arcade), showing a contrast in the happy conotations of the seaside, and the lonely position the protagonist is in.
As the song ends, so does our protagonists journey into the unknown.

Storyboard and yesterdays update follow up.
Lets ask ourselves why it isn't here. It may well be due to the fact that Lewis has it and he hasn't uploaded it. He's not here today, so tomorrow, attendence providing, or friday will be the days that it is uploaded.
On the topic of the song, as of now we're still using this "Agnostic Clown" characters myspace song, however if we cannot get hold of it, I've taken majority control of the group, through actually turning up, and I have chosen the support song to be "She dosen't exist" by The Elrics.
I've actually downloaded this song, and am listening to it now (again), and the song could easily be used with our "sad, lonely man on a beach of happiness".
Filming will be resceduled as soon as my group decided they actually want to do something and they turn up.
UPDATE: We have the song, as the expence of $0.90. I'd like to take this moment to thank Mrs Hammond for the purchase of the song. If you want the $0.90 back, i would be more than happy to oblige. providing its on or after friday. because thats pay day.

Music Video Update
Right, due to recent weather situation, we could not travel to bournmouth in order to film our music video. This is hardly ideal, obviously. However, this could be a blessing in disguise, as I've yet to discover how to rip music off of myspace. In a change of plan, by Adams reccomendation, I am to email the Codeine Velvet Club for permission to use their song "little sister". Should I not get a responce (likely), then I have downloaded a song by unsigned Oxford band The Elrics called "she doesn't exist", which isn't as bad as I thought it might be.

Agnostic Clown- The Latest
Sorry for not updating it recently. I have no excuse. So, where are we? I have joined forces with Adam and Lewis to create some sort of supergroup. We have decided on an artist; Agnostic Clown. We've decided that he plays music of an acoustic rock nature. The song we're using is called standing in the rain, and some early ideas we've had include shooting in black and white, and the use of a beach.
Ultimatley, by the end of the day we should each have a storeyboard on our blogs (technology depending), and also i should have a few more music videos on my blog. then we can film it in the new year, and all will be good.

Vanity Kills- Codeine Velvet Club
I'm going to analyse "Vanity Kills" by Codeine Velvet Club. The song belongs to the alternative rock genre. The video demonstates characteristics of a rock video, as it shows the band performing their song, and this is usually the focus of a rock video.
One thing i found with the video and the song is there is no connection. It is simply the song being played in a recoding studio in black and white. Some videos that do have a connection between video and lyrics would be "21 Guns" by Green Day, "When you were young" by The Killers and "I write sins not tradegys" by Panic! at the Disco. Each of these use the lyrics to portray a short narative.
There is, however, a relationship between the music and the visuals.Whenever there is an insrument solo, the camera focus' on they member playing that instrument. This is similar to the bands other video "Hollywood", in which the camera cuts in time to the guitar at the start of the chorus.
From this video I get the impreesion the record company is trying to pitch the lead members of the band (Jon Lawler and Lou Hickey) as stars. Lawler is recognisable from his other band The Fratellis, therefore by focusing on him, people who watch the video are familier with the musician, and so they can broaden their audience. The band is being filmed in formal wear, as if to give the viewer the impression they are a classy band.

Music videos-Rock
In the majority of rock music videos at some point you will see the artist performing the song. In a few videos I saw, the band didn't perform the song, however the video followed a narrative based on the song. One example of this type of music video could be "Ole black and blue eyes" by The Fratellis. This video is animated, therefore the band wouldn't be in it. And example of the former would be "21 guns" by Green Day, which also won a few VMAs.

Music Video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irp8CNj9qBI
for some reason i can't download youtube videos, but theres the link. Bohemian Rhapsody is the most inluential music video ever, as it was one of the first to break the mould of just live performances being shown on tv. it was unique, and lead to music fans everywhere hailing Queen as one of the truley great bands of the 20'th century.
