Evaluation

Our a2 coursework task this year was to produce a music video. I formed a group with Lewis Holifiled and Adam Brown, and we begun researching music videos. These music videos would give us a some sort of inspiration for what our video could be like.

After the reasearch we looked into artists we could use for our video. In the end, we narrowed it down to two artists; Colloquial Spatulism and Agnostic Clown. We decided on Agnostic Clown and his song "Standing in the Rain". We chose this song, as if offered plenty of scope for our video, and gave us room to craft the song around the video.

Our original plan was to film someone waiting for someone else, them not turning up, and for the original character to go to the places the couple were going to. These included a mini golf course and a beach pier. Due to monetary constraints and time issues, we couldn't use this idea. Instead we opted for something more simplistic, in that someone would be waiting for someone else at a bus stop, and the other person not showing.

Our music video features several nods to popular culture, i.e. Gavin and Stacy (on the television in the middle section), Nike trainers (at the start), and a Manchester United hoodie (throughout). These were added into the video to give the whole piece a sense of familiarity, as these are things that people see on a regular basis, and will make the whole thing seem more real.

In retrospect, there were scenes I would've liked to re film. The bits at the bus stop could've been filmed better, and the performance scenes, which we found to be similar to the music videos we researched, maybe shouldve been better placed (location wise).

People who had seen the video gave the video positive feedback, saying for the genre it fits, it's perfect.

In all, I felt our music video portrays the conventions shown in other rock/acoustic rock videos quite well.

We also had to create a DVD cover and and advert for aforementioned DVD. Full analysis of the texts can be found on the respective blog posts.

In all, I felt our group did well in our task. Maybe if we'd spent our time wisely, we'd have a visually better video, however what we have done I am very proud of.

Final Cut

heres the final cut. Will analyse within the hour.

Advert

Heres the advert for the DVD. The advert is the DVD cover on a brickwall, as a poster would be. The advert would be featured in a magazine, maybe as a poster.
The advert has , written in stencil, the artist name, the release information and some critical repsonses. This is apparent in other asverts we looked at. The stencil is meant to look as if it's been grafitti'd on. This idea came to me when looking at the album covers "21st Century Breakdown" and "Think Tank", by Green Day and Blur respectivly.
The wall itself is there to represent the difficulty of the music industry. Often the music industry has been likened to a "brick wall", as in attempting to break into if is like "running into a brick wall". As the Agnostic Clown is an unsigned artist, we decided this is a perfect connotation of unsigned acts per se.
Ideally I would have wanted the poster to be washed away slightly, however it proved impossible.

DVD Cover

This is our final DVD cover. The cover uses a gray, black and white colour scheme, which reflects the music video. The front of the cover has 4 images from the video. The spine of the cover features the name of the DVD and the artist name. The back feature a track list and more images from the video.
All of the writing in on the cover is black, which somewhat reflects the mood of the song used in the video.
